Night Photography in Deoksugung Palace, Seoul, South Korea

We will look at night photography in Deoksugung Palace and see how good it is as a night-time tourist activity in Seoul, South Korea. Deoksugung I think is a bit underrated landmark for tourists visiting Seoul. Considering that it is very near the city hall and other major attractions like Myeongdong, Namdaemun and Insadong, I notice that it receives fewer visitors compared to the rest. Perhaps, it is overshadowed by the much larger Gyeongbukgung that many don’t find it necessary to visit this site. But one of its major “secrets” is that it is usually open until nine in the evening, allowing for more intimate tour of the complex, and of course, night photography!

May I just say that I am impressed and grateful to the Korean culture of keeping their sites open to artists and photographers. You can’t imagine the relief of not being accosted by a security guard for having a tripod and taking photos of the structures. How I wish we can have that kind of culture in my country. Anyways, enough of segue and hopeless rant and see the photos and video. Who knows, you might include Deoksugung in your next visit to South Korea?

Night Photography Settings

There is really no hard rules in determining the settings for night photography. Light intensity can change any time and due to many factors. You can adjust the speed and opening accordingly. The only two things you have to make sure is to use a tripod and try to keep the ISO to the minimum to avoid noise. Take some test shots. And when you’re happy get those final shots.

As you can see, night photography can be a great option for people who may look for something different to do while in Seoul. All you need to have is a tripod and an appreciation of how beautiful and calm it is to be in the midst of this historic and scenic palace ground.
