Revisiting Cloud 9 and Its Boardwalk

Just a few days ago, I had the chance to revisit Siargao Island. That would be several years after the pandemic when when a major typhonn devastated the entire island. By now, everything has bounced back and tourism, it seems, has been making a revenge come back with so many tourists visiting the destination and the major site of General Luna hosting so many tourist establishments.

For starters, Siargao Island is renowned for its surf culture and stunning natural beauty and is home to the iconic surf break known as Cloud 9. Here;s a little trivia, the place was named after the Filipino candy bar, Cloud 9 that the foreign surfers liked and actually used as a sort of secret code for the place (which was a highly-secret from the global community of surfers). But of course, everybody knows that it’s no secret anymore. Now, famous among surfers worldwide, Cloud 9 offers more than just waves—its boardwalk provides a picturesque spot for both adventurers and those seeking a tranquil escape. Whether you're a seasoned surfer or a curious traveler, revisiting Cloud 9 and its boardwalk will reveal why this destination continues to captivate hearts.

The Allure of Cloud 9

Cloud 9 has earned its reputation as one of the top surf spots in the Philippines. The powerful, barreling waves attract surfers from around the globe, offering a thrilling experience for those ready to take on the challenge. But Cloud 9 isn't just for surfers; its breathtaking surroundings and vibrant atmosphere make it a must-visit for everyone.

The Boardwalk Experience

Here’s a bummer first - you now have to pay one hundred pesos to get to the boardwalk. But if you realize that you aactually see where the money goes, that is to maintain the boardwalk, then it becomes easy to accept this reality.

The boardwalk at Cloud 9 is a beloved feature that adds to the charm of this surf destination. Stretching out over the turquoise waters, the boardwalk offers stunning views of the surf breaks and the surrounding seascape. It was completely wiped out during the strong typhoon aa few years ago, and a new boardwalk was built, but with a single level viewdeck compared to the multi-level pavilion of the first one. Here are some highlights of the boardwalk experience:

Sunrise and Sunset Views

One of the most enchanting aspects of the Cloud 9 boardwalk is the opportunity to witness breathtaking sunrises and sunsets. Early risers can enjoy the peaceful morning light reflecting off the water, while evening visitors are treated to a spectacular display of colors as the sun dips below the horizon.

Surfing Spectacles

Even if you're not surfing, the boardwalk is the perfect vantage point to watch surfers ride the famous Cloud 9 waves. The thrill of seeing skilled surfers navigate the powerful waves is an experience in itself, providing a sense of the energy and excitement that defines this surf spot.

Learning to Surf

When there are no typhoons or low pressure in the horizon that create the spectacle barrels and the waves are much calmer, You will see that Cloud 9 is a preferred spot to learn surfing. There are many local services that provide the surf boards and the instructors. There are even “videographers” who offer to take your photo or video while you surf… or tumble on the water.

Relaxation and Reflection

The serene environment of the Cloud 9 boardwalk makes it an ideal place for relaxation and reflection. Stroll along the wooden planks, feel the gentle sea breeze, and take a moment to soak in the natural beauty that surrounds you. It's a great spot to unwind and appreciate the simplicity of island life.

Tips for Visiting Cloud 9 and Its Boardwalk

To make the most of your visit to Cloud 9 and its boardwalk, consider these tips:

  1. Time Your Visit: Sunrise and sunset are magical times to visit the boardwalk. Plan your visit accordingly to capture the best views and photographs.

  2. Respect the Surfers: If you're watching surfers, be mindful of their space and respect the surf etiquette. Avoid crowding the boardwalk, especially during peak surf times.

  3. Stay Hydrated and Protected: Bring water, sunscreen, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun, as the boardwalk can get quite warm during the day.

  4. Capture the Moment: Don't forget your camera or smartphone. The views from the boardwalk are picture-perfect and worth capturing.

  5. Wear your swimming attire even if you don’t have plans to surf: the waters may just be too tempting. Better be prepared.

Conclusion

Revisiting Cloud 9 and its boardwalk gave me a viewpoint that things have changed and will continue to change for Siargao. And it offered me a chance to reconnect with nature and experience the unique charm of Siargao Island. I know, too cliche, but hey. Whether you're catching waves, enjoying the tranquil beauty, or simply taking in the vibrant atmosphere, Cloud 9 remains a destination that leaves a lasting impression. Plan your visit to Cloud 9 and its boardwalk to discover why this iconic surf spot continues to be a favorite among travelers and surfers alike.
